Hello!
It's now been four months since Cohost went read-only and I still miss it. In an internet full of stressful live feeds, Cohost was a slower, more relaxed place; a small neighborhood of neat people I could visit at my own pace. This was especially true of the Cohost Build Club, the quarterly model group build.
Designed as more of a book club than a competition, Cohost Build Club was a chill space for builders to try their take on a shared theme. There were no prizes, no hard requirements, and no rewards beyond the joy of sharing a hobby and the satisfaction of challenging oneself to try something new.
In my eulogy for the site, I said that Cohost was "a promise as to what is to come". In this start of a new year, I figured I should do my part to keep that promise. I'm really excited by the initial response and I look forward to building this internet neighborhood together.
On that note, let's get started!
Given the short length, the theme for this round is works in progress. Half-built kits, stickers sheets left for later, paint jobs that were left to dry; anything you've been meaning to get back to but never found the time.1
As always, rules are as follows:
We'll be running February 7 to February 28. I strongly encourage sharing WIP pics and any thoughts/journaling you do along the way.
A few additional notes:
Formatting: One of the main reasons I picked email as medium is that it allows for the same kind of rich formatting as Cohost. Send your submissions in any format you like (plaintext, markdown, formatted email, etc.) and I'll do my best to make it work. (Oh and of course, no character limits.)
Frequency: I haven't decided how often I'll send out updates, but I'll make sure to not flood your inboxes. As with Cohost, send in updates as frequently or infrequently as you like and I'll handle batching them together.2
Feedback: Much like the builds this round, this project is very much a work in progress. I'll be fleshing this out as it goes, so please share any feedback you have along the way.
Thank you all for your participation again, and happy building!
TwoAi
1. If you've completed every kit you've started, please let me know how my backlog is dying take a bit of time to go a step further! Augment old kits with newer techniques, fix up your collection display, whatever you think could use an extra touch.
2. I'm still a bit worried about spam filters, so I'll also announce on my Bluesky any time I send out an update.
3. Isn't it wild that Cohost had built-in footnotes3?
